    The short version

    • Claude Code vs WordPress is not really a website-builder comparison. WordPress is a content management system built for people who publish a lot of pages and want a dashboard to do it. Claude Code builds you a website or app to spec, exactly the way your business works, with no dashboard to learn.
    • Pick WordPress when the site is mostly writing - a blog, a news section, a content library someone non-technical needs to update every week from a familiar editor. Pick Claude Code when the site needs to do something specific - a calculator, a portal, a booking flow, a tool - that a stack of WordPress plugins would only fake.
    • The real WordPress cost is not the software, which is free. It is the plugins, the theme, the hosting, and the ongoing maintenance to keep all of them updated and unbroken. A Claude Code build trades that recurring plugin-and-update tax for owning the code yourself.

    The short answer

Use WordPress when your website is mostly content - articles, pages, a blog someone non-technical needs to publish to every week from a dashboard they already know. Use Claude Code when your website needs to do something specific to how your business runs - a pricing calculator, a client portal, a booking flow, an internal tool - where WordPress would only get you there by stacking plugins that each add cost, maintenance, and a new thing that can break. WordPress is a content management system with a website attached. Claude Code builds the website or app your business actually needs, to spec, with no dashboard to learn and no plugin tax to pay.

What each one is actually for

WordPress was built for one job and is still very good at it: managing a lot of content. If you publish regularly and want a non-technical person to log into a familiar editor and hit publish, that is exactly what WordPress was designed around, and roughly two in five websites run on it for that reason. The website is almost a side effect of the content system.

Claude Code is not a content management system and does not pretend to be. You describe the site or tool you want in plain language inside the desktop app, and it builds it - the pages, the logic, the database behind it. There is no admin dashboard to learn because the thing it builds is shaped around your business, not around a general-purpose publishing tool that then has to be bent to fit.

    Where WordPress wins

    • A content-heavy site - a real blog, a news section, a growing library of articles a non-technical person updates constantly from a familiar editor
    • A team that needs a login-and-publish dashboard, where the person adding content should never touch anything that looks like code
    • A standard site you want live this afternoon from a pre-made theme, where off-the-shelf is genuinely good enough and nothing about it is specific to you
    • A site whose needs are common enough that a well-supported plugin already does exactly what you want, and you are happy to maintain that plugin over time

    Where Claude Code wins

    • A site that has to do something - a quote calculator, a client portal, a booking system, an internal dashboard - rather than mostly display content
    • Anything specific to how your business works, where a WordPress plugin would only approximate what you need and fight you on the last 20%
    • A build where you want to own the code outright instead of renting functionality through a stack of plugins you have to keep updated and compatible
    • A tool or app that has a website as one part of it, not a website that has a small tool bolted on through a plugin

The cost nobody quotes you up front

WordPress itself is free, and that free headline hides the real bill. A real WordPress site is usually the free core plus a premium theme, plus a handful of paid plugins for the things the core does not do - a form, an SEO tool, a booking add-on, a security layer - plus hosting, plus the ongoing work of keeping every one of those updated so a plugin update does not quietly break your site. That maintenance is the part that surprises people: WordPress does not stay working on its own, and the more plugins you add to reach what you actually wanted, the more moving parts there are to break each time one updates.

This is the same build-versus-buy question that runs under most software decisions. A Claude Code build trades the recurring plugin-and-theme tax and the update-maintenance load for owning your code, at the cost of it being yours to maintain rather than a vendor's. Neither is free - they are different bills, and which is cheaper depends on how specific your site's job really is.

    How to actually choose

    If your site is mostly...Use
Articles, a blog, a content library updated weekly by a non-technical personWordPress
A standard brochure site you want live today from a themeWordPress
A calculator, portal, booking flow, or internal toolClaude Code
Specific to how your business runs, where plugins keep falling shortClaude Code
A real app that happens to have a website in front of itClaude Code

A straight decision, by the site you are building

[How to build a website with AI](/blog/how-to-build-a-website-with-ai) walks through the Claude Code build itself if you land on that side. If the thing you actually need is a tool rather than a site, [how to build an internal tool with Claude Code instead of buying software](/blog/how-to-build-an-internal-tool-with-claude-code-instead-of-buying-software) runs the same build-versus-buy test on a wider set of decisions.

    Frequently asked questions

Is Claude Code a replacement for WordPress?

Not exactly. WordPress is a content management system built for publishing a lot of content from a dashboard, and it is still the better pick for a content-heavy site a non-technical person updates weekly. Claude Code replaces WordPress when your site needs to do something specific - a calculator, a portal, a booking flow - that WordPress would only fake through a stack of plugins.

Which is cheaper, Claude Code or WordPress?

It depends on how specific your site is. WordPress core is free, but a real site adds a premium theme, several paid plugins, hosting, and ongoing maintenance to keep it all updated and unbroken. A Claude Code build trades that recurring plugin-and-update tax for owning the code yourself, which you then maintain. Neither is truly free - they are different bills.

Do I need to know how to code to build a site with Claude Code?

No. You describe the site or tool you want in plain language inside Claude Code's desktop app, and it builds the pages, the logic, and the database behind them. You still review and test the result, the same way you would check any new site before pointing customers at it.

Can a non-technical person update a Claude Code site later?

For frequent content edits, WordPress's dashboard is genuinely easier, which is exactly why a content-heavy blog often belongs there. For a Claude Code build, you update it by describing the change to Claude Code the same way you described the original - which suits sites that change occasionally by function more than sites republished daily by a team.

What about SEO - does one rank better than the other?

Neither has an inherent ranking advantage. WordPress reaches good SEO through plugins you configure and maintain; a Claude Code build has the same SEO fundamentals built directly into the code without a plugin to manage. Rankings come from the content and structure of the site, not from which tool produced it.
